"... return to the LORD your God and obey His voice... "... the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants... "if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all our heart and with all your soul. "For this commandment which I command you today, it is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. "It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' "Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' "But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Father, the wisdom and truth of the Old Testament sheds light on the New Testament. Here Moses teaches his people that You will circumcise their hearts. We know that circumcision of the male children in Israel was a sign of the covenant between You and the children of Abraham. What we may not have realized is that You will circumcise the heart of a believer, taking away the covering of sin and making us pure before You and identifying us as Yours, just as clearly as the circumcision of an Israeli male child was a sign of the covenant promise. You place a big "if" in the covenant promise. If we turn to You with all our heart and with all of our soul, You will circumcise our heart. We know, Father, that Israel sinned and that adherence to the law was impossible, even for Moses, David and Noah. Father, the good news is that, even though we should obey the law, Jesus has come and equipped us with the power of the Holy Spirit and the New Covenant is now a reality. Where You once circumcised the hearts of Abraham's children, Jesus has given us, by Your grace, a new heart and a New Promise. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to us and we have the truth inscribed upon our hearts forever. The Mercy Seat always did sit on top of the Ark of the Covenant (the Law), and now it is Your mercy and grace that prevails and we are redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus and our faith in that fact lifts us into eternity! We praise You this day, amen.
